This oval mandala, made from artemesia foliage, inspired me to create a figure of mystery and power. In keeping with that theme, I surrounded the piece with a frame that I made using ancient Futhark runes.
There is something about symmetry that has always fascinated me, particularly raidial symmetry. This is the symmetry of the mandala. I have been drawing mandalas for many years. The past few years I have taken my photographs of flowers and foliage and used the computer to turn them into what I call "Botanical Mandalas". I intend to spend the year exploring the mandala form and variations on radial symmetry. I plan to keep a journal of my thoughts in this process. Over the course of the year, I hope to create (on average) a new work each week. The blog format is a perfect vehicle to chronicle text and images.
