I generally create my botanical mandalas to serve as a canvas to which I add my drawings. But every so often a mandala stands out on its own and needs no embellishment. I liked the elegant structure of this mandala created using Japanese Painted Ferns. My only artistic contribution was to add jewel elements using the colors of the stem and to edit the outer edges so it would stand out against a black background.
There is something about symmetry that has always fascinated me, particularly raidial symmetry. This is the symmetry of the mandala. I have been drawing mandalas for many years. The past few years I have taken my photographs of flowers and foliage and used the computer to turn them into what I call "Botanical Mandalas". I intend to spend the year exploring the mandala form and variations on radial symmetry. I plan to keep a journal of my thoughts in this process. Over the course of the year, I hope to create (on average) a new work each week. The blog format is a perfect vehicle to chronicle text and images.
Yes, this one is lovely - very lacy looking.
