This botanical mandala, created from a photograph of begonia leaves, reminded me of a sunflower. I liked the form of the mandala so much that I decided to add only a few images to decorate it, including a stylized sun symbol in the center.
I also make works of art the same way using all kinds of pictures. Lately I have been collecting leaves and flowers. They make very interesting designs
There is something about symmetry that has always fascinated me, particularly raidial symmetry. This is the symmetry of the mandala. I have been drawing mandalas for many years. The past few years I have taken my photographs of flowers and foliage and used the computer to turn them into what I call "Botanical Mandalas". I intend to spend the year exploring the mandala form and variations on radial symmetry. I plan to keep a journal of my thoughts in this process. Over the course of the year, I hope to create (on average) a new work each week. The blog format is a perfect vehicle to chronicle text and images.
